Reasons to Add Glass Doors to Your Bookcases

If you've ever had to spend time dusting the tops of books, you know how much time it can take to clean when you have more than a shelf full. You also have to take care of the dust that's fallen behind the books.

You have three main options here. One is to keep dusting more often, which is probably the opposite of what you want to do. Another is to seal up the books in boxes, which negates the reasons for having the books in the first place.

The third is to add doors to the bookcase, either in swinging or sliding form. Before you decide that you don't want to replace all your cases with new ones that come with doors, look at having custom glass doors designed for the cases you have now.

Object Visibility

Glass doors are a perfect choice because they offer the protection you need against dust and dirt while still allowing you to see what's on the shelves. The glass doesn't have to be fancy; simple tempered glass slabs that fit well within the confines of the front of the case should do.

Ease of Cleaning

Glass doors block most of the airflow that usually sweeps past the books. Doors don't block air from reaching anything on the shelves, but dust is more likely to hit the glass of the doors instead.

You won't be able to stop all dust from getting inside, so you'll still have to clean the books and shelves occasionally. But you should notice a difference in how much dust collects on the books and shelves once the doors are on. If you have pets, the doors will block a lot of fur from drifting in. Cleaning should become a lot easier almost immediately.

Protection and Safety Benefits

Those doors can also help if you need to do some safety proofing in your home. The doors stop small children from grabbing items on the shelves (or worse, trying to climb up the shelves themselves). You also don’t have to worry about bored or skittish pets knocking knickknacks and other items off the shelf.

The doors can also help hold in items during moderate earthquakes. Western Nevada might not experience the giant shakers that other parts of the country have, but it does have its share, including that earthquake swarm that hit the Reno region earlier this year. Even if the cases don't come down, lighter books that are loosely placed on the shelves can move around in smaller quakes.

You will have to secure the doors themselves so kids can't pull them open and so that, if there's a quake, the books don't fly against the doors and push them open.

But securing the door is not difficult to do. When you have the doors added, you can opt for special latches that hold the doors shut. Or, if you're having new cases custom-made, you can opt for sliding doors that can't be pushed open by flying books in a quake. If you do this option, you'll still have to have a childproof latch put on to protect curious children.

As usual, remember to bolt the cases to the wall so they don't fall over. Glass doors will not help protect children or pets if the cases themselves collapse.
